Official Statement of the Afghan Women’s New Future Movement In Support of the International Criminal Court’s Action Against Taliban Leaders

The Afghan Women’s New Future Movement welcomes and firmly supports the historic action taken by the International Criminal Court against Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s supreme leader, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the group’s chief justice, in connection with alleged crimes against humanity and the systematic persecution of Afghan women and girls.

This significant action represents a vital step toward justice, accountability, and recognition of the grave abuses inflicted upon the women and girls of Afghanistan. Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the fundamental rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls have been systematically and deliberately violated.

The Taliban’s bans on education, employment, freedom of movement, access to public spaces, and participation in social and political life are not isolated policies. They form part of an organized system of gender-based persecution intended to erase women from public life and deprive them of their dignity, independence, and future.

As a movement representing and amplifying the voices of Afghan women, we call upon the international community, the United Nations, governments, and international human rights institutions to support the International Criminal Court and take meaningful steps to ensure accountability and justice for the victims and survivors of these crimes.

This action sends a clear message to the Taliban and to all perpetrators of serious human rights violations: crimes committed against women and girls will not be ignored, and those responsible must be held accountable. It also serves as an important demonstration of the international community’s commitment to defending human rights, human dignity, and the rule of law.

The Afghan Women’s New Future Movement calls upon the people of Afghanistan—particularly the courageous women and girls of our country—to remain united in their resistance to oppression, discrimination, and injustice. We further urge governments, international institutions, and human rights organizations to cooperate fully with international justice mechanisms and to take effective measures against regimes and individuals responsible for systematic persecution.

Justice may be delayed, but it must not be denied. History has shown that the voices of victims and survivors cannot be silenced forever. Their demands for freedom, dignity, and accountability will ultimately be heard.
